About the hotel

Burn How 'The house on the hill by the stream' is just 200 metres from Lake Windermere.

Burn How is where it all begins. Those who enjoy the fresh country air can meander along picturesque woodland trails through unspoilt countryside. Enjoy a cruise on Lake Windermere or venture further afield and take the ferry across the lake to visit Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter. At the end of the day, relax with family and friends in the congenial atmosphere of the lounge and bar, or on a pleasant summer's evening, take in the beautiful surroundings of our patio and gardens.

The layout of The Burn How is refreshingly different to most other hotels.

In the main house you will find the reception area, The Burn How Restaurant and the residents’ lounge and bar, whereas all of the hotel’s bedrooms are located outside the main building within our private grounds.

Room information

Relax in the comfort of a room to suit your needs from modern chalet style Garden Rooms to more traditional bedrooms in The Lodge. We also have 4 ground floor Rose Garden Rooms with direct access onto the rose garden patio. For that special occasion, treat yourself to a few days in the exclusive Mews or Bay Room or perhaps choose one of the 1st floor Superior Rose Garden Rooms which have a four-poster bed and a balcony overlooking the rose garden terrace.

All bedrooms have private parking, en suite facilities, a television and radio plus complimentary hot beverages, and most have pleasant garden views.

The Lodge is a detached Victorian residence opposite the main Reception building. It features 8 traditional double or twin bedrooms, each individual in character. 2 of the bedrooms are situated on the ground floor. Then there are the ground floor Rose Garden Rooms which are located behind the main Reception building. They have a double and a single bed and a patio that leads out onto the rose garden terrace. One of these bedrooms (room 14) has been specially adapted for wheelchair access.

Next there are Garden Chalets which are spacious individual rooms situated on the driveway on the approach to the main Reception building. These bedrooms offer peace and privacy and most have a private balcony with views over the gardens. They have a double and a single bed and are particularly suitable for families as they also have an additional roll-out bed allowing 2 adults and 2 children to share the same room. One of the Garden Chalets (room 10) can sleep a family of 5 as it has a double bed, a single bed and a bunk bed.

The 1st floor Superior Rose Garden Rooms have a four-poster bed and a private balcony overlooking the rose garden terrace. And lastly, the The Mews Room and The Bay Room (both non-smoking) are in a detached bungalow within the hotel grounds. Both offer extra space and privacy and they each have a luxury bathroom.
